I am pleasantly surprised at the utility of the Amakusa Red 800x. Previously, I have been using an Arkansas Hard stone, aproximately 800 grit, which I love for a final sharpening of work knives. It is, however, not fine enough for kitchen knives. The Amakusa feels more like a 600x and is easier to use than any other stone I own because of its large size, and it does a better job roughing out the blade than what I'm used to. I love using it.

Mostly for fun...or razors

This is a pretty decent stone. I'd agree with the other review that this is a fun stone. I don't use it for speed or anything like that. It looks nice, is a Japanese natural, and it's cheap, so that's why I picked one up.
I think I'd rather use it on razors than knives, since mine doesn't cut super fast, but you can also use it on your knives.

Fun stone to use

This is a stone for those that want to experience natural stone action on their knives. The stone is roughly in the 800 grit range, fairly hard and also reasonably fast stone. The finish is very even and one can jump from it to 2k synthetic, or natural Aoto to bridge to higher grits or just stop there. the stone being hard is slow dishing, the slurry generation is moderate, it is by no means muddy stone.
I like using it to repair chips and bevel work on knives before I continue with my natural stone progression.
